Rotary Club of Denver Mile High Foundation

STATUS

The Rotary Club of Denver Mile High Foundation is a Colorado Nonprofit Corporation and is fully qualified as a tax-exempt entity pursuant to Sec. 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations to the Foundation are fully deductible to the donor pursuant to both federal and state tax law: Federal Tax ID # 84-1257470. Although it is a separate Foundation, the Rotary Club of Denver Mile High Foundation assists in the funding of local and international community service projects that are undertaken by the Rotary Club of Denver Mile High.

PROJECTS

The Rotary Club of Denver Mile High has established an admirable record of recognition and awards for outstanding accomplishments in local and world community service and projects. Notable among the Club's projects have been the following, most of which have been facilitated and made possible by funding from the Foundation:

1990+ Assist the Senior Housing residents at the Barth Hotel: painted rooms, cleaned windows, furnished the Christmas tree and participated in the annual Christmas tree decoration parties, arranged Valentine's Day parties and a barbecue.

1991 Purchased, reconditioned, shipped and delivered an ambulance and generator to a remote village in the Dominican Republic.

1992 Participate every year in the Gleaning Project for the Compa Food Ministries, to provide food for needy families in the Denver area.

1993 Participate in the annual Christmas party for underprivileged children, organized by the Denver Rescue Mission.

 
1994 Obtained a Rotary International Grant to fund a project in Nepal to build a water delivery system to provide water to several remote villages. Participated with another club in a water project in Ecuador.

1995 Sponsored a Youth Exchange Student from the Czech Republic, who attended George Washington High School.

1996 Established a Scholarship Program and Fund at the Denver Third Way Center, an alternative high school and learning center for at-risk youth. Collected and refurbished computers and equipment that was shipped to Moscow. A medical team, led by member Dr. Donald Elliott, performed cardiac surgery in Moscow.

1997 Sponsored and funded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar for one year's study in International Management in New Zealand (with a partial-grant from the Rotary International Foundation). Collected and shipped two tons of medical supplies, clothing and toys to Kazakhstan.

1998 With Project Open Hearts, led by member Rita Lenz, and with the assistance of Dr. Elliott, helped fund a trip to Kazakhstan where the team performed the first open heart surgery ever in that country. Began funding and assisting an orphanage in a Kazakhstan city. Sponsored Key-Pal program at Samuel Elementary School with 35 Rotarians and 5th graders reading books and communicating by e-mail for four months.

1999 Received Colorado's prestigious award as the "Outstanding Philanthropic Organization" at National Philanthropy Day in Colorado; selected by a partnership of several non-profit and professional community organizations.

2000
Collected and refurbished donated computers for the Computer Magnet Program at Denver's George Washington High School. Provided financial aid for the earthquake in India.

2001 Began several literacy projects with the Denver Public Schools. Obtained and completed a matching grant from Rotary International to provide computers to 38 schools in Mongolia.

2002
Purchased an Oxygen Manifold System for a Project Open Hearts program in Mongolia. Began the process to obtain a grant for wheelchairs to handicapped persons in Mongolia.

2003
Three members of the Club participated with Project Open Hearts on a trip to Mongolia where member Rita Lenz was honored with a "Certificate of Appreciation" from the Parliament of Mongolia. Established wheelchair program with the Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar.

2004 Provided supplies, books and winter clothing for two orphanages: Nairobi, Kenya, for AIDS victims; and Kashmir, India, for children orphaned due to the fighting there. Provided substantial temporary housing and supplies to 40 people victimized by the tsunami in Asia. Helped sponsor club members who joined surgical trips to Tanzania and the Philippines and contributed funding and supplies. Organized and funded an AIDS training program in Zimbabwe. Helped outfit a school library in Bahia, Brazil.

 

2005 Through our Challenge Grants, awarded $5,000 in grants.  One of these grants was a $2,000 grant to Families First for construction of the Families First Family Center, housing the Family Support Line, which offers free, non-medical, confidential information and response to concerns about child development and parenting issues.

 

FUNDRAISING

  • "Loy Dickinson Donor" recognition established to recognize donors of at least $1,000 to the Rotary Club of DMH Foundation (cash or value of items).
  • Initial fund-raising auction held in 1994, raised over $10,000.
  • Second Club auction raised $17,000, then matched by McCormick Foundation.
  • Auctions and raffles to raise funds.
  • Held first two Golf Tournaments in 2004 and 2005.
  • Co-hosted a fund raiser with the Colorado Chapter of the Wine Society of America. Dinner and auction raised $8,000 for the Foundation.
  • Developed a business plan devised by Jim Steele to raise a capital endowment of $50,000 and then use the annual income from investments and donations to fund the Club's community and international service projects.
  • Is currently planning to hold a Million Dollar "Hole-in-One" Shootout event at the Kennedy Golf Course in June
