Polio is:

  • A crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, polio (poliomyelitis) still strikes children mainly under the age of five in countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
  • Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death.  Because there is no cure for polio, the best protection is prevention. For as little as US$0.60 worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.
  • It can cause paralysis within hours, and polio paralysis is almost always irreversible.
  • In the most severe cases, polio attacks the motor neurons of the brain stem, causing breathing difficulty or even death.
  • Historically, polio has been the world’s greatest cause of disability.

If polio isn’t eradicated, the world will continue to live under the threat of the disease. More than 10 million children will be paralyzed in the next 40 years if the world fails to capitalize on its US$5 billion global investment in eradication.

The Future of Rotary IS IN YOUR HANDS

The Rotary motto Service Above Self conveys the humanitarian spirit of the organization's more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.

* * * ANNOUNCEMENTS * * *

The Metro Denver Rotaract club hosted a fundraiser for Shelter Box on January 21st for Haiti.  The night of the event raised about $1000, we have been challenged to raise an additional $500 that will be matched so we will reach our goal of $2000. We are $300 away from our goal and still waiting for donations to come in.

Because of the event that evening, a  connection was made with an Account Executive with Fox News in which coordinated ShelterBox to be featured on the Tom Martino Show last Monday morning.  Please follow the link:

ShelterBox USA Teams to Send 40 Tons of Additional Supplies to Haiti

Lakewood Ranch, Fla. – January 20, 2010 -- Forty tons of emergency aid is being flown to Haiti from Newquay Cornwall Airport as ShelterBox USA’s massive aid operation to the earthquake-stricken country continues.  Enough emergency shelter for 7,000 people will be loaded onto a chartered Airbus A300 to be flown directly to Port au Prince Airport or nearby Santa Domingo to be transferred immediately to the devastated nation.

Because of the logistical nightmare of getting aid into Haiti, ShelterBox USA has used a variety of means to get aid into the island including flying boxes on a Red Cross plane from France and on Virgin Atlantic flights via London Heathrow. So far, 1,700 ShelterBoxes have been dispatched.

“What ShelterBox provides is unique and does not duplicate any other aid that is provided,” states Veronica Brandon Miller, executive director, ShelterBox USA.  “We work with all relief organizations to enhance and complete the services and supplies that help survivors.  In many cases, our boxes have made the difference between life and death.”

Securing a chartered aircraft for 700 more ShelterBoxes means thousands of people in Haiti left homeless by last week’s devastating earthquake will be receiving disaster relief tents and other emergency supplies essential for survival.

ShelterBox’s Founder and CEO Tom Henderson said: ‘In terms of logistics, the aid operation in Haiti has been ShelterBox’s most challenging in the last decade, with only one airport on the island which has been shut until recently and the port shut as well.

"As food, water and medicines are now starting to get in, the focus now is fulfilling the urgent need for emergency shelter."

To add to the logistical problems of delivering aid in Haiti, the airfield has only been operating during daylight hours and there has been a shortage of aviation fuel.

Public donations are vital to ShelterBox’s continuing work around the world. To make a donation go to www.shelterboxusa.org to donate online and get the latest updates on the charity’s response to the Haiti earthquake.

Since its inception in 2000, ShelterBox has provided shelter and dignity following over 100 disasters in more than 60 countries, bringing the organization to the forefront of international disaster relief.  ShelterBox instantly responds to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. In many cases “ShelterBoxes” have made the difference between life and death.

Each “ShelterBox” supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.

On Saturday, January 30th, from 9am – 12pm, the Five Points Cultural
District Rotary will be canvassing our local service area to promote the
2010 Census.  The Census count is what determines the allocation of money that gets put into social services, transportation, etc. and determines congressional seats.  We know that one of the greatest services we can provide to our community is to make sure everyone gets counted.  This will have a long-term positive affect on the people who live in northeast Denver. We are asking for the help of all those who are committed to the well being of northeast Denver to help us accomplish this task. This will be the second canvassing event for our Club, and our goal is to reach a wider area with your help! Materials and training will be provided, and the actual canvassing time will be two
hours.

We will be sending out an Evite shortly to help us count the number of
volunteers, with a reply due date of Friday, January 22nd. Please send
additional email addresses to suzie.ahlers@fivepointsrotarydenver.org to
have them added to the Evite. For any additional questions, please contact
our Vice President of Service, Emily Steed Shamsid-Deen, at
eesteed@hotmail.com.

Thank you, and we look forward to meeting you on January 30th!
