Let's hear your stories! Our club has a collection of banners from Rotary clubs all over the US and around the world where our club members have visited or we've had guests. For a full list go to our website:
For background this is a formal report for a Water Supply Matching Grant project that we have been working on since May 2009.The grant was for $18,000 of which DMHR paid in $4000
Last Saturday, we had the formal opening of the water well and dispensing station for Kalikuvu Village,Kitui District, Kenya. Two Karura Rotary members and Chuck Rudolph were there. This place is extremely remote, 170 km from Nairobi, most of the roads are more potholes than road, the last 30 kms were dirt extremely rutty pathway, more a cleared brush pathway. There were no power lines visible for the last 15 km. One way takes 4 hours from Nairobi.
When we arrrived, there was a village assembly there under a spreading large acacia tree, benches had been pulled out of the nearby Anglican church. We went thru formal greeting with the village elders, and then it started.Long rows of singing, chanting and dancing women came around the church, the dancing (traditional) lasted for over an hour. Then came the formal handover from Rotary to the Muuo Womens group who will manage the funding and operation of the project.
Recurrent in the speeches was the clean water means life.Several spoke on having to go somewhere between 3 and 8 km to get water each day (depends on the season in this arid area) was total consuming for the women. Moreover, the water they got was filthy water.Believe me,this water system is the event of the last decades for this village.
Denver Mile High presented its presents in an exchange at the end of the ceremonies.I gave Rotary 2010 pins to the leaders of the Muuo Group, a big box of See's chocolates to the Muuo, a soccer ball and school supplies to the headmaster.
Denver Mile High was the celebrated club, I guess because I came so far.Really the local club, Karura Rotary (Nairobi) is the one who did the effort and should have received all the credits. My partner from Karura, Julius Ruingu, has been the organizer, coordinator, and controller. This last week he made 3 long trips to Kalikuvu.
