May 5th speaker - This compelling book addresses human rights violations of children around the world and provides insight into what we can do to address this critical issue. Caryn will speak about her work and the important message contained within the pages of her book. The first portrait Caryn West created was a life-size drawing of Sammy Davis Jr. to accompany a book report about his auto-biography Yes I Can. The portrait was done in crayon, and she was only nine years old.
In 2006, Caryn conceived The Trouble with the Alphabet; a moment of inspiration that led her family on an incredible life changing journey. This journey did not involve trekking across Africa, infiltrating a human trafficking ring or witnessing the senseless and incomprehensible horrors of genocide. It involved her mind and heart setting out together to learn the truth about the world and the current condition of humanity. Since then her efforts have been focused on bringing her collective experience together in a project that gives full expression to her range of creativity and allows her to say “Yes I Can” make a difference. The culmination of this work is her first book The Trouble with the Alphabet. The book is a window into the heart of human rights violations and the children who suffer globally.
Come hear Caryn talk about the issues, the opposition we face when we attempt to change the status quo and the importance of planting seeds. Caryn will also be showing a short music video created for the project, have her artwork on display and will be signing books. See the images through the eyes of an artist. Hear the stories as if you were a child. Refuse to be complacent. Learn the truth. Tell the world. Make a difference.
Denver Mile High Rotary and its members were very well recognized this year at the District Conference.
The Club received the "Family of Rotary" Award for the great work that we have done for the last several years with our Iraqi honorary members. A special thanks to Jack Houser and Chuck Rudolph for all their efforts. The most deserving participant in this project was Ann Maier, who truly was the leader of our Club efforts to assist our Iraqi friends.
The Club won the Best Growth Award for a large club, with a 14% increase in membership during the year.
We also won the Presidential Citation for achievements in a broad range of areas identified as important by RI President John Kenney.
There were also well deserved individual recognition:
Ann Tull received a Rotary Foundation District Service Award for her dedication to the Rotary Scholars program.
Dan Himelspach also received a Rotary Foundation District Service Award for his management of the District Grants program.
Jack Houser was recognized with the Four Way Test Award for living his life according to the Four Way Test.
It was truly a joyful and well deserved evening.

Dear Club Presidents and Assistant Governors, Our new District Rotary Peace Corps Committee has been hard at work since November, 2009 developing an outstanding program for working with the Peace Corps on international projects. Now we are to the point where we need to put the database of all Peace Corps related people together as they may be known in or out of our clubs (in the community), including returned Peace Corps Volunteers or outgoing Peace Corps Volunteers. The Committee would greatly appreciate your cooperation in taking the attached simplified spread sheet and inserting the names and other information called for of any Peace Corps related person known to your club members. For those of you who have already responded we thank you for your efforts. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact Charlie Hunt (a Lo Do Rotarian and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer) at 303-993-7545 or cmh@colehunt.net. We are so appreciative of your support on this effort to develop a rich and rewarding relationship with the Peace Corps for Rotarians in the future. Ultimately it is humanity that will win-big time. The Rotary District Assembly is a half-day training event hosted by our District. The event is scheduled for Saturday morning, June 5th from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Start your day with some coffee and a continental breakfast, and then participate in some excellent training to prepare you for specific leadership roles in our club. There are training sessions dedicated to a wide variety of jobs, including Club Secretary, Club Treasurer, Committee Chairs, Membership, the Rotary Foundation... and many more. This is also an EXCELLENT opportunity for a new Rotarian to learn a lot about Rotary in general, in a short period of time. For those who volunteer to attend the District Assembly, this activity will count as a make-up for your attendance AND the Denver Mile High Rotary Club will reimburse you for your registration fee.
